From 1954, the company began putting into service the futuristic-looking PD-4501 Scenicruisers, developed specifically for it by General Motors, whose distinctive partly raised passenger compartment, three-axle layout and outstanding comfort for the time set a new benchmark in American long-distance travel. One of Greyhound’s most important rivals, Continental Trailways, an alliance bringing together several regional bus companies, naturally did not want to fall behind in the race, but it ultimately did not find a suitable vehicle in the portfolios of American manufacturers. It had to go as far as Europe, to Ulm in West Germany, where Karl Kässbohrer Fahrzeugwerke was at that time still finding its feet with the Setra brand, launched only a few years earlier. The Golden Eagle, created there to meet American requirements, eventually left a far greater legacy than anyone could have imagined at the time: it not only became one of the most unusual models in Setra’s history, but also laid the foundations for an American coach family that would later become independent.

Continental Trailways first, of course, tried to find a suitable rival for the Scenicruiser among domestic manufacturers. It also examined General Motors’ 40-foot, or roughly 12.2-metre-long, PD-4901 Golden Chariot prototype, and the vehicle even made it to the company’s headquarters in Dallas, but no order followed. Continental also saw potential in the Flxible VistaLiner and tried to persuade the manufacturer to develop a 40-foot version, but this too came to nothing.

The flagship of rival Greyhound, the General Motors-built PD-4501 Scenicruiser

Meanwhile, the circle of possible domestic partners was becoming ever smaller. Aerocoach quit bus production in 1952, and ACF-Brill followed a year later, while General Motors was coming to dominate an ever larger share of the American market. Continental therefore continued its search in Europe, contacting British, Dutch, Belgian, French and West German manufacturers before eventually choosing Karl Kässbohrer Fahrzeugwerke. The Ulm-based company particularly caught the Americans’ attention with its experience in building self-supporting buses. Kässbohrer had presented the S 8 in 1951, only a few years earlier: its first bus to carry the Setra brand name, coined from the German word selbsttragend, meaning self-supporting. Importantly, the vehicle later known as the Golden Eagle was not simply an existing Setra adapted for the American market. The design was created specifically to Continental’s requirements and combined solutions from several different schools of bus building. Kässbohrer brought its experience in self-supporting body construction to the project, while the American side arrived with its own ideas and specific technical requirements. The design was influenced by Greyhound’s Scenicruiser as well as the Flxible VistaLiner; from the latter, among other things, it adopted the concept of Torsilastic rubber-spring suspension and the idea of a panoramic rear lounge. The American-origin Torsilastic suspension had been developed by B. F. Goodrich back in the 1930s. Its special feature was that instead of conventional steel springs or air springs, rubber elements subjected to torsional loads provided the springing effect. The rubber elements embedded in a metal housing did not simply compress when the running gear moved, but twisted, in other words underwent torsional deformation, and then tried to return to their original position thanks to their elasticity. In essence, they performed the same task as a conventional spring, but exploited the torsional elasticity of rubber instead of steel. The relatively simple system required little maintenance while effectively damping shocks, vibrations and noise caused by road irregularities, which proved particularly advantageous on coaches covering long distances. Torsilastic later became one of the characteristic technical solutions of the Eagle coach family for many years. The dimensions of the vehicle were likewise dictated by Continental’s requirements: the Golden Eagle’s 40-foot, or roughly 12.2-metre, length was also specified by the American company.

The first prototype was completed in Ulm by 1956. According to Setra’s own historical retrospective, the buses built for Continental Trailways sometimes covered as much as 25,000 miles, or around 40,000 kilometres, per month. Even by today’s standards, that mileage is remarkable: averaged per day it is equivalent to more than 1,300 kilometres, and on an annual basis — had the vehicle been used continuously at such intensity — it would amount to nearly half a million kilometres.

The German MAN–ZF driveline, however, did not prove ideal in the long term for such exceptional demands, so Continental increasingly turned towards American power units that were easier to source and service in North America. Cummins engines appeared in later series, and the Detroit Diesel 8V-71 also entered the Eagle driveline range. The air-conditioned vehicle was designed specifically for Continental’s premium “Five Star” service, and accordingly the seats were placed with greater-than-average spacing so passengers would have more legroom. A small onboard kitchen was installed between the two vehicle sections, while at the very rear there was a nine-seat panoramic lounge, made even more distinctive by large glass panels built into the roof. The Super Golden Eagle could carry a total of 63 passengers, meaning it was essentially an 18-metre articulated luxury liner — in 1958. Technically, too, it differed from the conventional Golden Eagle: propulsion was provided by a 275 hp Rolls-Royce diesel engine, installed under the floor in the front section of the vehicle. Through a six-speed ZF gearbox, the engine drove the B axle, located ahead of the articulation.

The design ultimately never entered series production. One of the main reasons was precisely its enormous 60-foot, or around 18.3-metre, length. Size restrictions in force in certain U.S. states placed tight limits on where the vehicles could operate, making transcontinental use — for which such a high-capacity coach might have been especially attractive — difficult to achieve. The four Super Golden Eagles ultimately worked primarily on the Denver–Colorado Springs–Pueblo corridor, and no further examples were ordered. The type did not disappear without trace, however: two of the vehicles have survived to the present day, so tangible reminders of one of the most unusual bus designs of the 1950s still exist.

The earlier restoration of one of the surviving articulated examples also highlights the unusual technical solutions Kässbohrer’s engineers used to make the huge vehicle manageable. The axle group of the rear section of the four-axle Super Golden Eagle was positively steered. The steering was mechanically linked to the articulation: when the front and rear sections turned relative to each other, the system adjusted the steering angle of the rear wheels accordingly. The aim was for the trailer section to follow the track of the front section as accurately as possible when cornering, reducing the off-tracking of the 60-foot vehicle. Contemporary accounts suggest that, thanks to this, the Super Golden Eagle was surprisingly manoeuvrable despite its size.

Decades later, this rather complex structure caused serious headaches during restoration. The original articulation mechanism controlling the steering of the rear axles had by then become badly worn, and replacing it posed a major problem. In the end, help arrived from Germany in an almost unbelievable way: even decades after the Super Golden Eagles had been built, Kässbohrer still had an original, unused spare articulation and steering unit that had been made for this design at the time. This was acquired and used during the restoration of the vehicle.

The four Super Golden Eagles therefore ultimately remained only a special side branch of the much larger story set in motion by the cooperation between Continental and Kässbohrer. The real legacy of the programme was the basic Eagle design itself, which did not disappear after the German manufacturer’s withdrawal, but took on a life of its own and gradually developed over the following decades into an independent American coach family. This by no means marked the end of Setra’s presence in America, as the Ulm manufacturer later returned to the United States with other models, but from this point on the Eagle developed along a separate path.

In the first years of the cooperation, between 1956 and 1958, 51 Golden Eagles, 41 Silver Eagles and four Super Golden Eagles — a total of 96 Eagles — were built in Ulm. In addition, two further articulated Setras based on Henschel underpinnings were built for American Bus Lines, which had meanwhile come under Continental ownership; these entered service in the Academy Express operation and can be regarded as important precursors of the later Super Golden Eagles. The programme agreed between Continental and Kässbohrer, however, was far larger in scale, covering around 185 buses — Setra’s own historical summaries round this up and refer to it as an American export deal of around 200 vehicles. West Germany’s economy was growing rapidly, demand for European buses was rising with it, and Kässbohrer’s order book was becoming ever larger. The overseas deal that had previously been of major importance therefore gradually lost significance for the Ulm manufacturer, which increasingly wanted to focus its capacity on its own European markets. Continental Trailways, however, did not want to give up the Eagle, which had by then proved itself. In 1959 it requested further modifications to the design, and plans were drawn up for the next generation, the New Silver Eagle, whose production was originally still to be handled by Kässbohrer.

Before series production of the new version could begin, however, Kässbohrer decided to withdraw from the Eagle programme. This did not mean Continental would have to start again with a completely new design: the German manufacturer handed over the production equipment needed to continue the programme, and parts manufactured in Ulm were also available for the vehicles already contracted. The new production location ultimately became Belgium, where La Brugeoise et Nivelles of Bruges was the first to join the programme.

The remaining more than 80 New Silver Eagles were built between 1960 and 1961 at the La Brugeoise plant, but these vehicles were still based directly on Kässbohrer’s design and were assembled partly using components from Ulm. The Belgian company’s role, however, proved only temporary. In the longer term, Continental wanted to create its own production base for the Eagle, so it established a company in Belgium called Bus & Car N.V., which received its own bus factory in Sint-Michiels, near Bruges. The new plant began operations at the end of 1961, after which Eagle production was gradually transferred there from La Brugeoise.

With the creation of Bus & Car, the Eagle story entered a new phase. Continental was no longer simply having its own coaches built by an outside European manufacturer, but also directly controlled the production background of the type. The first Eagles built there were still closely related technically to Kässbohrer’s original design, but they were continuously developed further over the following years. In parallel, the “Americanisation” of the type also began more decisively: from the Model 01 onward, more and more solutions tailored specifically to the needs of the American market were adopted, while in the driveline, the earlier German units were gradually replaced by components that were easier to source and service in North America. The New Silver Eagles assembled by La Brugeoise were therefore still direct continuations of the programme begun in Ulm, but the establishment of Bus & Car created the basis for independent Eagle production and marked the start of the design’s gradual transformation into a coach family developed fundamentally around American requirements.

Over the following decades, the Eagle moved ever further away from its German roots, while developing into an independent model family and, in time, an independent bus brand. Another important turning point came in 1974, when Eagle production began not only in Belgium but also in the United States, in Brownsville, Texas. In a curious way, then, almost two decades after an American bus company had developed its new long-distance coach with a West German manufacturer, the Eagle finally became a genuinely American-built type. Production in Belgium continued for a few more years, but the centre of gravity for vehicles intended for the American market gradually shifted to Texas.

By then, the Eagle was only distantly related technically to the Golden Eagle introduced in 1956, but its name had become one of the best-known brands in the world of American intercity coaches. The story took a curious turn in 1987, when Greyhound acquired its old rival Trailways, and with the deal the Eagle bus manufacturing company also came into its ownership. Thus, more than thirty years after development of the Golden Eagle had been launched precisely so that Continental could field a suitable rival to Greyhound’s Scenicruiser, Greyhound itself ultimately became the owner of Eagle.

KAPCSOLÓDÓ

Bányászbuszból nemzeti ikonná – a Greyhound száz éve

Az amerikai Greyhound busztársaság neve mára szinte összefonódott az Egyesült Államok modern kulturális mítoszával, a legendás buszok dalokban és filmekben is visszaköszönnek, még ha soha nem is számítottak igazán csillogónak.
