development in the capital for the coming years. By coincidence, almost at the same time the International Road Transport Union (IRU) published an overview of Bus Rapid Transit systems, or BRT for short, which serve in many cities around the world as a more affordable alternative to rail transit. Below we review that article, supplemented with our own experience and numerous additional details and points of interest.

In this article, we will be dealing with genuine BRT systems, ones that comply with the relevant standard. They do all this more cheaply and flexibly, with faster implementation. Although BRT systems essentially originated in Latin America, where this mode has existed since the late 1970s, and are also popular in parts of Asia and Africa, the IRU’s compilation focuses more on European examples — though at the end of the article we will also take a trip to Mexico. Below, through four practical examples, we show how this solution can replace metro or tram services, how it can help promote tourism, and also how major progress in passenger satisfaction can be achieved simply by organising accelerated bus routes intelligently, even on conventional infrastructure.

A solution to a megacity’s problems: İETT Metrobüs

A good example of large-scale implementation is Europe’s largest and best-known BRT network in the classic sense, Istanbul’s Metrobüs system, which we also presented in detail on our portal during our 2022 visit to the headquarters of operator İETT. Today, however, it is divided into eight routes and short workings, with extremely high frequencies — in places as short as 20 seconds — and a peak-period hourly passenger capacity of more than 30,000 people per direction. This clearly shows that, true to its name, the system here very much replaces a metro. Although the Turkish metropolis naturally also has an underground (and elevated) rail metro network, its expansion has been hampered by high costs, while BRT offered a fast and inexpensive way to address transport problems — the first, 18.5-kilometre Topkapı–Avcılar section was completed in just 77 days. In Istanbul, now home to almost 16 million people, heavy surface congestion is almost constant despite the multi-lane radial roads built across the city (something we have also experienced personally), which all but paralyses conventional bus transport on certain sections, especially in inner-city areas close to the strait. Thanks to its segregated infrastructure, the Metrobüs system therefore offers a meaningful fast-transport alternative to private modes (according to our local sources, unauthorised drivers who venture into the largely fenced-off bus lane are caught by police almost immediately), although the 1+1 lane layout makes it relatively sensitive to service disruptions.

The picture speaks for itself: peak traffic in Istanbul before and after the construction of the Metrobüs corridor (Photo: İETT)

The 52-kilometre BRT corridor, which operates continuously 24 hours a day, handles around one million journeys daily and is estimated to reduce passengers’ time spent travelling by an average of 52 minutes per day. In addition to improving mobility, BRT also has well-measurable environmental effects: according to calculations, the system removes around 100,000 cars from traffic, resulting in a daily reduction in emissions equivalent to nearly 760 tonnes of carbon dioxide, even though only diesel buses operate on the route. The corridor, built in several stages, was delivered for just over USD 259 million, a fraction of the cost of a metro line of similar length. The fleet previously consisted of conventional articulated types (Mercedes-Benz Citaro G and Conecto G), followed by the Mercedes-Benz CapaCity and later the Otokar Kent XL four-axle extended articulated buses, but passengers can also ride on more unusual vehicles such as the Phileas and AKIA Ultra LF 25 bi-articulated buses. Despite the island-platform station layout, the system does not require special vehicles, which also helps reduce costs, with the compromise that traffic on the line runs on the left because the buses’ passenger doors are on the right-hand side. For a long time, Istanbul had Turkey’s only BRT system, but in July 2025 a second corridor opened in nearby Sakarya, also home to Otokar’s factory.

Aalborg: where the tram would have been too expensive

A much smaller, but also noteworthy, European example is the case of Aalborg in Denmark, which clearly illustrates how BRT-type solutions can provide a cost-effective alternative to surface rail transit. It is much more about branding and sensible route planning. In recent years, the local transport authority, Transport for London (TfL), has had to respond quickly to declining bus ridership and the need to serve suburban areas efficiently, but with limited infrastructure support. The idea of express services linking outer London areas in a loop was first raised in 2008 by then mayor Boris Johnson (to whom the English capital also owes the retro-futuristic New Routemaster double-deckers built by Wrightbus), but the final Superloop concept was not announced until 2023, under Sadiq Khan’s mayoralty.

On Superloop routes, passengers travel on vehicles familiar from London’s other bus services, with the Alexander Dennis Enviro400 City being one characteristic type (Photo: TfL)

The network currently consists of 12 routes, most of which together form a continuous orbital ring of around 218 kilometres (as the network’s name suggests), connecting London’s outer boroughs and their railway stations.
